Old House Woods: Virginia’s Haunted Forest

In episode four  of Nature Obscura, Marissa and Grace travel to Old House Woods, a small but infamous forest along the Chesapeake Bay in Diggs, Virginia. Though only about 50 acres in size, this coastal woodland holds centuries of history, environmental change, and deeply rooted paranormal legends.

The episode begins by exploring the habitat surrounding Old House Woods, including the eerie “ghost forests” created by rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion. We discuss the wildlife that depends on this fragile ecosystem, from migratory shorebirds to the osprey, an important indicator species whose recent decline raises concerns about the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

From there, we step into the paranormal legends and ghost stories that haunt the forest. Old House Woods is named for a colonial-era home said to have burned down twice before vanishing completely, only to reappear as a ghostly image. Visitors have reported glowing orbs, phantom fog, shadow figures, and the unsettling feeling of being watched.

The episode also explores centuries of piracy and conflict in the Chesapeake Bay, from ghost ships and wandering pirate spirits to skeletal soldiers and warnings carried on storm winds. Old House Woods may not have a single cryptid at its center, but it remains a place where history, ecology, and the supernatural refuse to stay buried.
