Michigan Dogman: Manistee National Forest Cryptid

In our very first episode of Nature Obscura, Marissa and Grace take you deep into Michigan’s Huron–Manistee National Forests, nearly one million acres of towering red pines, rolling hardwood hills, winding rivers, and ancient dunes. Before diving into the main story, we each share our own spooky or nature encounters from the week because a little personal weirdness always comes first.

We start with a tour of the forest itself. The Manistee side was restored after heavy logging in the early twentieth century and today the landscape is a mix of young jack pine forests, wetlands, sand dunes, and clear rivers that carve through the terrain. The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness preserves one of the last freshwater coastal dune systems in the country and offers sweeping views over Lake Michigan. These forests are also a critical habitat for the Kirtland’s Warbler, a rare songbird that relies almost entirely on young jack pine stands for breeding and has made a remarkable comeback thanks to decades of conservation efforts.

Then we dive into the forest’s most elusive resident, the Michigan Dogman. It is described as a seven-foot-tall bipedal creature with a human-like torso, pawed hands, a dog’s head, yellow eyes, and thick dark fur. This cryptid has been reported from 1887 to the present. Sightings often appear in years ending in seven and folklore includes rumors of abandoned airports, hoaxes like the Gable Film, and possible connections to Ottawa oral history and wendigo-like shapeshifters.

We explore several theories about the Dogman including misidentification of wildlife such as bears or wolves, an undiscovered species or hybrid, paranormal or extraterrestrial entities, and even Cold War–era experiments gone wrong.

A centerpiece of the episode is the 2017 Joe Barger encounter, a Michigan truck driver who claims he came face-to-face with a Dogman while driving through the Manistee Forest. He fired two point-blank shots at the creature which vanished, but the experience haunted him for months. This story perfectly illustrates why the Dogman legend continues to grip locals, hunters, and cryptid enthusiasts alike.
